So many of you have asked, so here it is. This is my first youtube posting. I may post more later but none of them will be as important to me as this one. If you like it, I would be very grateful if you would take a moment to rate it by simply clicking the appropriate red star.(Favorited over 80 times and only 40 rating? Come on guys!)
Why:
I was “born in the Navy” at Pearl at Tripler Army Hospital in the early 60’s.(Don’t let the “Army hospital” throw you off- it’s where all the wounded from December 7th were treated.) Both of my parents were in the Navy. My father was aboard the USS Skate SSN 578 when she was the first to surface at the North Pole (No, it wasn’t Nautilus SSN 571- look it up.) He later served in the Cold War submarine service. I grew up on several Navy bases on the west coast during the Vietnam War era with Riverine Warfare sailors, Marine Corps veterans of Khe Sahn, sailors from the USS Coral Sea, the USS Kitty Hawk and so many more. I was raised among heroes- guys who’s dress blues probably had to be reinforced to hold a hundred pounds of medals. These were the men who taught us to play ball, to be good sports, good boy scouts and good Americans. I remember the friendships, the farewells, the homecomings and sadly the funerals.
This is my father and mother. These are the uncles who raised me, the brothers and sisters I was privelged to serve with, the nephews and nieces who now carry on in the footsteps of the great and courageous ones who came before us. I am so very grateful to have the opportunity to honor you all with a Hero’s tribute. Thank you all for your service to America. Thank you all for never letting me down. Thank you all for making the Navy the pride of the seas. Thank you (most importantly) for everything all of you have given to me.
How:
I made it with free software on a computer running Win 98 using film I gathered off the web. It took a long time but for me it was worth it.
NOW HEAR THIS :
The WW II sub USS Silversides is moored at
Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum in Muskegon, Michigan. I had the honor of being able to visit her and I hope you can too. I think you’ll fall in love with her as I did.

She needs our help. From what I understand they can always use help by volunteers (call or visit to see what and how) and of course they need money for her upkeep. She’s in need of regular maintenance and has got to get into dry dock. Please do what you can to help. It our Navy, it’s our heritage, it’s our history. Most of all, she’s OUR BOAT!!!!!
http://glnmm.org/save_the_silversides.htm
There are many such vessels that need our help. Some are in better repair than others but all need to be preserved. I know you’ll do what you can if even just to spread the word. The more people know the better.

This is my favourite hymn – my father was in the Navy, and I think of him everytime I hear this lovely hymn. Love to all – Ken
It was William …
It was William Whiting actually! All the other facts are correct though
Everytime I hear …
Everytime I hear this version, I get chills that are sparked from patriotism. I’ve never served but wish dearly I had. Only those that have ever served or those that have a true place in their hearts for our armed services, those who serve, and the man above, will ever really appreciate this hymn.

When he wrote this …
When he wrote this tales of tragedy were all too common, ships sunk and hundreds of lives were claimed all the time. Since then the death of brave sailors and innocent passengers either taken into the icy depths or dashed against rocks has been reduced severely, but it is still far far too common. Whenever i can i give money to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in the knowledge that it is going to a good cause. I salute all those who died on the sea and all those still on. May god be kind
The greatest hymn …
The greatest hymn in the world. Written by the English clergyman William Whitelaw in the 1800s. He would travel to America in later life, a sea trip of thousands of miles and unpredictable weather, i bet he hummed this all the way. In the US this is the Navy Hymn, in the UK the Mariners Hymn- it means so much to both nations. Every year on Remembrance sunday we sing this at my Parish church in remembrance of all those who died on the sea to feed and protect us in wars past.
Thanks for …
Thanks for including the quick shot of the LCAC…go Gator Navy!
Hans Zimmer …
Hans Zimmer rearranged the hymn in two versions for the soundtrack of Crimson Tide . This is the choral version (“Little Duck”) from the CD. The other one is the last part of track “Roll Tide”. (downloadable from YouTube as “Pearl Harbor-Navy 101″)
It’s the most moving version what I ever heard…
Zimmer used fine mixes of natrural human voice with strings and brass, and very soft and warm “digital essences” in the background. The movie won the Grammy for “best soundtrack of the year” in 1996.
an amazing hymn im …
an amazing hymn im proud to be enlisted
There are no words …
There are no words in any language to express my feelings about this hymn or my feelings towards those who serve. Having served myself, I understand the sacrifice our sailors and Marines are put through, often unsung and begrudginly accounted. You have my unending thanks and respect. I am still awestruck to see these brave souls in harms way to preserve our freedom, and can only imagine this tribute to be a small and humble recognition to the debt owed them. God bless our services!
There is something …
There is something very powerful that hits the soul when you see our young men laying down their lives for there country. It takes a special man to be willing to do that. God bless you all!!

I hope to become a Navy pilot.

I truly love the Navy. But one day, I do hope to become one of the greatest warriors in history, a Marine! Semper Fi!
